8 Cliff Street

The first buildings on this site were a stone store and a two-storied wooden house, both erected before 1835 (reference). Cliff Chambers, built c. 1890 now occupies this site and was first referred to as Cliff Chambers in 1900 Post Office Directory.

1896: Messrs Pyne, Treloar and Co. of Cliff-street Fremantle, wrote to the commissioner for Railways offering to use their private trucks on the line to Coolgardie. The private offer was declined, the Govt. saying it was not considered advisable to allow private firms to run their own trucks for the conveyance of ‘general merchandise’. (reference)

1898 Messrs, Broadhurst, Macneil & Co. desire to intimate to the merchants of Dongarra and Geraldton that their schooner Harriet Constance, now about arriving at Fremantle from Carnarvon, will be on the berth for the two ports mentioned. The agents at Fremantle are Messrs. Begg and Kingsbury, Cliff Street (reference).

1899 Conference with lumpers union representatives.  A meeting of merchants of Fremantle and Perth was held at the Hotel Fremantle, Cliff-street, to confer with representatives from the union as to the best means of releasing perishable goods from the vessels owned by companies affected by the strike.  Amongst the firms represented were Calthrop Bros. (reference)

1919 Another war-time story.  While Reginald Ralph Errington was serving his country at the war front, William Harold Mofflin formed an acquaintance with the soldier’s wife, Laura Louisa Errington.  Upon his return he found that his wife was known as Mrs. Mofflin, and she had been staying at Cliff Chambers, Fremantle… divorce proceedings…  (reference)

1921 The funeral of the late Mr Alexander William Glaskin… Deceased was for many years employed at the General Post Office, but latterly had followed the occupation of commercial traveller for the firm of Parsons Bros. and Co., Fremantle, and was held in high esteem by his fellow-travellers. He leaves a widow (Mrs. D. E. Glaskin) and one little daughter. The supporters of the pall were: Messrs. Willoughby (Parsons Bros, and Co.)… (reference)
